The Use of the Inverted Pyramid

The Inverted Pyramid has been a prominent news writing style that stretches back as far as the Civil War Era, cites Brown University in their online article "Newspapers in America: The briefest history".
However, its adoption as an industry standard is not a matter of tradition but rather a matter of efficiency.
This is due to the fact that it allows readers to quickly scan the first half of the piece and gather the basic information they need. It also gives the editors more leniency in the removal of the pieces of the article to leave more space for the newspaper.
The drawbacks of this style can be that it is of a different form than most people anticipate. Readers who take the time to read the entire section can feel at a loss, since the story is told out of order, with the most "exciting" parts at the beginning.
While this format deviates from traditional storytelling, it achieves its purpose of tactfully providing news in a brief manner.
