Online Journalism and its Protections
In the readily age of available Internet access, some take to questioning the validity of the work of online journalist, otherwise known as bloggers.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation defines a journalist as an individual who gathers information for the purpose of circulating it. It also make a point to highlight that the medium in which said journalist uses to circulate their information has no bearing on the authenticity of their work
In short, bloggers are indeed journalists as they fit into the aforementioned criteria.
No matter the media, Reporter's Privilege is essential to news writing.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation cited California case, Mitchell V. Superior Court, in saying that in order to preserve the vital information that reporters bring forth, their ability to be able to obtain sources must remain intact.
The Reporter's Privilege is still relevant in the 21st Century because it helps ensure that today's journalists are able to contact valid sources, which in doing so, makes sure that the public receives the highest quality of news.
